Rewriting the Narrative: YNISH and NICHIMI’s “APMKB”
Filipino artists YNISH and NICHIMI are gearing up to release “APMKB” (Ang Pangit Mo Ka-bonding). This synth-pop track redefines a traditionally negative phrase and transforms it into an anthem of empowerment and self-worth. The song’s vibrant sound, infused with disco and afrobeat rhythms, complements lyrics that encourage listeners to stand up against toxic behavior and embrace their value.
Inspiration from an Unexpected Moment
The concept behind “APMKB” emerged organically during a casual online hangout between the two artists. “We never had an initial idea about this collab,” explains YNISH. “But during that process of searching for themes, exchanging ideas, we came upon a very random moment that completely solidified this concept.” NICHIMI adds, “We initially believed this concept would fade into obscurity, yet it’s now taking shape.”
Blending Distinct Styles and Overcoming Challenges
The collaborative process involved navigating the challenges of remote work and blending their distinct musical styles. “Practically speaking, we had to work on the song over calls, online discussions, etc.,” says YNISH. “But for some reason, we both had similar thoughts on what this collab was gonna be.” NICHIMI adds, “Even though we are on the same spectrum in terms of our genres, we still have different approaches and target markets… We solely focus on blending our main genre, which is R&B.”
A New Direction for YNISH and NICHIMI
For YNISH, “APMKB” marks a return to R&B and a deeper exploration of personal experiences. “It’s a special single release for me since it’s only my third Filipino song and it’s my first collab track with NICHIMI.” NICHIMI sees the collaboration as an opportunity to expand his creative approach, incorporating dance music elements into his usual style. “I don’t think I ever tried incorporating a dance music genre into one of my previous songs.”
A Contrast of Sound and Message
The upbeat sound of “APMKB” complements the lyrics about recognizing one’s worth and moving forward. YNISH explains, “I think it’s poetic to create a song with contrasting themes. It’s always fun to have an upbeat song with lyrics that encourage self-love.” NICHIMI adds, “I always make the instrumental just slightly positive or sexy.” The artists hope this contrast will empower listeners to celebrate themselves and leave behind anything that diminishes their value.
Favorite Moments and Lasting Impressions
Both artists have their favorite parts of the song. YNISH loves the “festive” buildup and last chorus, while NICHIMI particularly loves the “powerful” bridge. Ultimately, they hope “APMKB” will inspire listeners to let go of anything that no longer serves them well. “Be it a job, a relationship, basically anything that doesn’t serve you well,” says YNISH. NICHIMI adds, “We’re hoping to share and give them an idea of how to deal with one-sided love and little-to-no-effort situations in a relationship with this song.”
“APMKB” is poised to be an anthem of self-love and empowerment, encouraging listeners to reclaim their power and celebrate their worth. The song’s infectious energy and relatable message will resonate with audiences worldwide.
